5 Delicious Ways To Use Peanut Butter On Your Next Camping Trip
Peanut butter is admittedly a bit of a controversial food. Is it healthy? Well, it depends on who you ask, but it certainly isn’t healthy to make it a staple of our diet. Nevertheless, we love it because it’s an easy protein source, it’s convenient and generally shelf-stable, and most of all, it’s truly delicious—for those of us who aren’t allergic, that is.
If you love this sweet, savory, spreadable concoction, then you’ll want to try one of these six delicious ways to use peanut butter on your next camping trip!

Grilled Peanut Butter Sandwich

Ingredients

Peanut butter, sliced bread, butter or oil, as well as any additions (like honey, banana or chocolate chips)

Directions

Take a slice of bread and spread with peanut butter. Add any additions, put another slice on top and make it into a sandwich. Spread a layer of butter (or oil, ghee etc.) on the outside and cook on a skillet until golden brown. Flip and do the same to the other side. Note: This would work over a campfire or over the stove in your camper.

Oatmeal with Peanut Butter and Bananas or Strawberries

Ingredients

Serves 4

2 cups rolled oats, 2 sliced bananas or strawberries, 1/4 cup almonds (chopped), 2 Tablespoons peanut butter, 2 Tablespoons maple syrup, honey or other sweetener as desired

Directions

Prepare the oats according to package directions until oats are tender and have absorbed most of the liquid. Add your toppings—honey or maple syrup, peanut butter, almonds and bananas. Feel free to mix and match what you like! If the oatmeal is too thick, try adding a bit of almond milk.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Campfire Burritos

I love peanut butter for breakfast! Think smoothies, toast, bagels, and oatmeal.

Ingredients

1 large flour (or corn) tortilla, per person
2 Tablespoons peanut butter, per person
2 Tablespoons mini chocolate chips
2 Tablespoons mini marshmallows, per person

Directions

Spread the peanut butter on your base (tortilla) and sprinkle with chocolate chips and marshmallows. Fold it into a burrito (or a sandwich) and wrap it in foil. Heat on the grill or over the campfire, until heated through—just don’t burn it.
Peanut Butter and Chocolate Banana Boat

Ingredients

Banana, peanut butter or peanut butter chips and chocolate chips, marshmallows or whatever you like!

Directions

Cut a small part of the banana peel off, the long way. Add toppings into your banana. When it’s filled (don’t go TOO crazy or it will make a mess), wrap it in aluminum foil, or parchment paper, and then aluminum foil if you prefer. The goal is to get it warm and a little melty, so using a campfire and putting it in the coals or using a grill grate will help control your temperature. When it gives a bit, remove it with the tongs. It will cool quickly, but be careful of the steam when you open it. Grab a spoon and enjoy your creation!

Campfire S’more Nachos

We saved the best for last!

Ingredients

6 whole graham crackers, broken into pieces (gluten-free work too), 1.5 cups mini marshmallows, 3/4 cup milk chocolate chips, 1.5 cups crumbled fudge brownies (gluten-free are fine), cooking spray or oil, 1/3 cup peanut butter, optional whipped topping

Directions

Stir graham crackers, marshmallows, brownies and morsels together in a large bowl. Place an 18-by-18 inch piece of heavy aluminum foil on the counter. Spray with cooking spray, or with a light mist of oil. Place the mixture in the center, and then drop bits of peanut butter across it, as evenly as you can. Double fold the top and the ends of the foil around it, with space for the steam to collect.
Put the packet on a grill—preheated to medium—or over your campfire or oven (on a shallow pan at 400 degrees for 10 minutes). Grill for five minutes or until the marshmallows and morsels melt. Carefully open. Top with whipped topping, if desired.
This delicious recipe is super messy and forgiving, so add or subtract to include your favorite ingredients. Enjoy!
