How to Plan the Perfect Colorado Ski Trip in an RV

Many people put the cover over their RV when the winter months roll around and miss out on some unique experiences. Don’t let the cold weather scare you away from RVing this winter. If you love to ski, you know that hotels and mountain cabins can be extremely pricey this time of year in popular ski destinations like Colorado. However, if you find the perfect RV rental, Colorado can be a budget-friendly way to experience an epic ski trip this season!

In fact, we’ve got a perfect trip planned for you. Recently, I visited Breckenridge, Colorado in my motorhome and had an incredible time! Here are some helpful tips and tricks to help you start planning your own mountain getaway this winter.

Step One: Choose Your Location

The first step to planning any RV road trip or getaway is to select your location. Colorado has a plethora of resort towns, so if you don’t already have a favorite, do a little research to find which one best suits your travel and ski style.

Breckenridge, Colorado, is known all over the world as being one of the best ski resorts in the United States. It’s absolutely beautiful, too! Even better, this Colorado mountain town has a year-round RV park close to the slopes.

Tiger Run RV Resort is one of the best RV parks we have ever stayed at. The location is unbeatable and the amenities are everything you’ll need for your visit to Breckenridge. With an indoor pool, two indoor spas, a common campfire area, a workout room, a cozy club room, a business center, and a game room, you won’t want to leave! More importantly, it’s only a 9-minute drive from the slopes!

Step Two: Find Your RV Rental for Colorado

There are two options for finding your RV rental: find an RV near your destination or find an RV near you. If you find an RV near you, you will have to tow it or drive it to your destination. For those who fly in or would prefer to not tote an RV across the country, search for a rental near the resort. Luckily, when it comes to finding an RV rental, Colorado has plenty of options! You’ll find ones that have cold weather in mind and will be warm and cozy when you come back from the slopes.

Types of RVs

Not sure what type of RV is right for you? Here are the main types of RVs:

  • Class A RV: This is the largest motorhome class. They can be up to 45 ft. long and are built on a commercial bus chassis. Class A RVs can oftentimes accommodate six or more people comfortably.
  • Class B RV: Class Bs are the smallest motorhome class. These are built on a van chassis and usually only accommodate one or two people.
  • Class C RV: Class C RVs are the in-between size. They are much larger than a campervan and typically have the amenities of a Class A RV, but are built on a smaller truck chassis.
  • Trailer: Trailers are RVs that you have to tow. They range in size from large, 30+ foot rigs to small teardrop campers.
  • Fifth-wheel: Fifth-wheels are often more luxurious than the average travel trailer. However, these rigs require a special fifth-wheel hitch.

What RV you decide on comes down to your particular needs and how many people will be traveling with you.

Winter Ready RVs

The important thing to keep in mind is that the RV that you choose will be your home for a few days in cold conditions. You want it to be able to adequately protect you against the elements.

Outdoorsy makes it easy to find RVs ready for the cold. Under “Amenities” on an RV’s listing, you’ll be able to see if the RV you’re looking at has a heater, indoor shower, and more.

Delivery for RV Rentals in Colorado

RV owners in Colorado realize that renters may not be comfortable driving RVs on mountain passes or through inclement winter weather. This is why many offer RV delivery within a certain radius free of charge or for a small additional fee. With RV delivery, the owner will bring your rig out to the campsite for you and help set it up. Talk about easy!

To see if an owner offers delivery, check out the listing page. You can also filter your search results by delivery options.

Step Three: Plan Your Colorado Activities

Colorado has great winter activities like skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and sledding— but there’s so much more to the state! If you love nature, Colorado is home to several national parks: Rocky Mountain National Park, Mesa Verde National Park, Great Sand Dunes National Park, and Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Cities like Denver serve as a hub for adventure, and lovable small towns cover the state.

In Breckenridge, be sure to check out the great shopping and dining along charming Main Street. You also won’t want to miss Breckenridge Brewery and Breckenridge Distillery. I truly can’t recommend Breckenridge enough. No matter what season, do yourself a favor and visit! Traveling there in an RV and staying at Tiger Run RV Resort makes it even more of a special trip.
