Warm-weather winter getaways

Camping takes on a whole different feel once the autumn leaves fall and temperatures start to drop. For most RVers, this time of year means heading south, and there are plenty of options for those seeking a warm-weather winter escape.

Florida

This one is obvious. It’s the state most of us think of first when we hear the term “snowbird,” and there’s a good reason for that. Florida is where many RVers head when temperatures start to drop elsewhere, and wintertime is the state’s busiest time of year for tourism, welcoming countless RVers to each of its many regions from the Florida Keys to the Cumberland Island National Seashore.

Bargain hunters and RVers on a budget will want to consider staying in the Florida Panhandle. Though it isn’t quite as warm as some other parts of Florida, you can get cheaper rates here during winter than during summer, unlike other regions of Florida, where RV parks charge more for campsites in the winter than summer. The discounted winter rates combined with fewer crowds make this an excellent time of year to see the Emerald Coast and enjoy its white-sand beaches.

Palm trees and beaches are great, but that’s not all there is to warm-weather camping in the dead of winter. Arizona, New Mexico and Texas are all popular winter destinations and have some of the best national parks in the country. And if you do want to have a little bit of beach time in your Southwest adventure, Texas has you covered.

Mexico

The U.S. has plenty of options for adventure-seekers looking to camp somewhere warm in winter, but the search doesn’t have to end there. Go south of the border and you’ll find that Mexico a the winter home for many American travelers. From Baja Mexico on the west to Acapulco far to the south and the Mayan Riviera to the east, Mexico is full of opportunities for a sun-filled winter escape.
